Geode

Introducing Geode, an experimental add-on to explore geolocation in Firefox 3 ahead of the implementation of geolocation in a future product release. Geode provides an early implementation of the W3C Geolocation specification so that developers can begin experimenting with enabling location-aware experiences using Firefox 3 today, and users can tell us what they think of the experience it provides. It includes a single experimental geolocation service provider so that any computer with WiFi can get accurate positioning data.[VIA:Firefox]

The Geolocation API defines a high-level interface to location information associated with the hosting device, such as latitude and longitude. The API itself is agnostic of the underlying location information sources. Common sources of location information include Global Positioning System (GPS) and location inferred from network signals such as IP address, RFID, WiFi and Bluetooth MAC addresses, and GSM/CDMA cell IDs.

The API is designed to enable both "one-shot" position requests and repeated position updates, as well as the ability to explicitly query the cached positions. Location information is represented by latitude and longitude coordinates. The Geolocation API in this specification builds upon earlier work in the industry, including [AZALOC], [GEARSLOC], and [LOCATIONAWARE].

Siren Call

This week I read a couple of blogs that brought the value of compromise to mind. The first is on the writing process by Fritz Onion. He makes a point that resonated with me:

“This brings me to my next compromise, which is the process of turning what I want to say into words. Once I have an 'image' of what I want to say in my head, the writing that comes form that image is always a disappointment. I'm not sure why this is, but I can honestly say that I have never written anything that I was completely satisfied with at the time of writing. Interestingly, long after I have written something I will go back and read it and be quite happy with it, but the time during which I am actually writing, it always feels like a compromise and never seems to match my expectation. The story in my head typically feels clear, concise, and compelling, but it never seems to come out quite that way.”

The second is what Don Box describes as the Taligent Effect:

“what happens when a group of people put adherence to a software trend first and lose sight of the value of shipping software that people will actually use.”

Striving for beauty in prose or design is like a siren call that is hard to avoid. For the most part I think we benefit. However, I guess the trick is knowing when the siren, as in the Greek myth, is leading us to project death.

Learning to learn

I came across the following graphic on retention:

Many programs focus on teaching students a mastery of the fundamentals. However, in many technical fields education is short lived and continuous learning is the norm. Does learning to learn then trump a mastery of the fundamentals?

If we become autodidactic masters, would we not then be able to overcome any learning gaps?

Much graduate work at MIT, by its nature, is independent learning. At the undergraduate level I see good efforts in this direction but the promise is still unrealized. In either case, I think MIT does better than most colleges at creating self teachers.

My personal learning cycle is:

1) Build a knowledge base
- read, read, read

2) Test your knowledge
- test, experiment, and challenge

3) Summarize and structure your findings
- write, write, write

4) Teach what you have learned
- explain it to others

The process is often iterative in steps and in cycle.

Something that was not obvious to me was "self feedback". On a traditional teaching structure, the feedback comes from the instructor. In self teaching, you give feedback to your self.

Vista Freedom

Method #1 - Using MSCONFIG

Launch MSCONFIG by from the Run menu.
Click on the Tools tab. Scroll down till you find "Disable UAP" (this should probably change to UAC in next Vista beta builds and in the RTM version). Click on that line.

Press the Launch button.
A CMD window will open. When the command is done, you can close the window.
Close MSCONFIG. You need to reboot the computer for changes to apply.

Note that you can re-enable UAC by selecting the "Enable UAP" line and then clicking on the Launch button.

Method #2 - Using Regedit

Open Registry Editor.
In Registry Editor, navigate to the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System

Locate the following value (DWORD):

EnableLUA
and give it a value of 0.
Note: As always, before making changes to your registry you should always make sure you have a valid backup. In cases where you're supposed to delete or modify keys or values from the registry it is possible to first export that key or value(s) to a .REG file before performing the changes.

Close Registry Editor. You need to reboot the computer for changes to apply.

In order to re-enable UAC just change the above value to 1.

Method #3 - Using Group Policy

This can be done via Local Group Policy or via Active Directory-based GPO, which is much more suited for large networks where one would like to disable UAC for many computers at once.

If using Local Group Policy you'll need to open the Group Policy Editor (Start > Run > gpedit.msc) from your Vista computer.

If using in AD-based GPO, open Group Policy Management Console (Start > Run > gpmc.msc) from a Vista computer that is a member of the domain. In the GPMC window, browse to the required GPO that is linked to the OU or domain where the Vista computers are located, then edit it.

In the Group Policy Editor window, browse to Computer Configuration > Windows Settings > Security Settings > Local Policies > Security Options.

In the right pane scroll to find the User Access Control policies (they're down at the bottom of the window). You need to configure the following policies:

You'll need to reboot your computers.

Method #4 - Using Control Panel

Open Control Panel.
Under User Account and Family settings click on the "Add or remove user account".

Click on one of the user accounts, for example you can use the Guest account.
Under the user account click on the "Go to the main User Account page" link.

Under "Make changes to your user account" click on the "Change security settings" link.

In the "Turn on User Account Control (UAC) to make your computer more secure" click to unselect the "Use User Account Control (UAC) to help protect your computer". Click on the Ok button.

You will be prompted to reboot your computer. Do so when ready.

In order to re-enable UAC just select the above checkbox and reboot.

Adam has received the Engineering in Logistics at MIT. Prior to MIT, he worked as a project manager for Bombardier Aerospace in Montreal, Canada, developing global information system architectures and implementing ERP systems. He has experience in procurement, operations, engineering and finance, and has worked in three countries. Previous to Bombardier, Adam worked as a technical systems analyst for STS Systems developing point-of-sale software. He completed his bachelors degree in commerce at McGill University in Montreal, specializing in information systems and strategic management. While in school, he ran a small consulting firm that built distributed networks and basic infrastructure for small businesses. He has consulted on numerous IT outsourcing agreements. BIOGRAPHY

Dr. Sarma is an Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He received his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1995, his ME from Carnegie Mellon University in 1992, and his B Tech from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, in 1989. He has previously worked for Schlumberger Oilfield Service and Lawrence Berkeley Laboratories.

Dr. Sarma's teaching interests include geometry and computational geometry, manufacturing, computation, and mechanics and materials. He has won many awards, including the Cecil and Ida Green Career Development Chair, the Den Hartog Teaching Excellence Award, and the Joseph H. Keenan Award for Innovation in Undergraduate Education. His research is focused on radio frequency identification systems and embedded computing, computer-aided design and computational geometry, and machines and manufacturing.

In 1999, Professor Sarma, Dr. David Brock and Professor Sunny Siu co-founded The Auto-ID Center at MIT. The Center conducts research in several areas of automatic identification, radio frequency identification, data gathering systems, protocols, supply chain issues and networking. The Center has now grown to 5 labs worldwide, including the University of Cambridge, Adelaide University, Keio University and Fudan University.
